HOPI KACHINAS

Hopi Kachinas or Katsinas are beings who mediate between this world and the spirit world. Some are spirits of plants, animals and weather, and some are ancestors or historic figures, or beings from other planets and stars. Some commemorate events important to the Hopi way. There are hundreds of Kachinas although not all are active in Hopi life at any one time. They come and go as Hopi needs change. The Kachinas are personated by human dancers during the yearly cycle of ceremonies. The intention of the dancer is to become the kachina he is personating and thus a conduit for that beings powers. Originally dolls were made to give to young children during the dances. The demand for Hopi Kachinas by collectors has refined Kachina carving into the category of fine art which is now aimed primarily at the non-Hopi collector. They are still carved from the root of the Cottonwood tree but perhaps these images have also become mediators between the Hopi and non-Hopi worlds.

Our collection changes constantly Please let us know if you are looking for a specific Kachina, or carver. We can send you a photo if we have something like it or if something new comes into our gallery.
