NAVAJO SANDPAINTINGS |
||
| Although these sandpaintings are works of art, they have their origins in a sacred healing ritual. With reverent care the Navajo Medicine Man trickles the colored minerals through his fingers to create images of the supernaturals on the hogan floor. A patient is placed in the center of the sand painting and the power of the gods is transmitted to the patient to restore balance and thus heal the sickness. These paintings that are created to heal, having absorbed the sickness, are destroyed at the end of the ritual. Sand artists who make permanent paintings to sell use the traditional minerals and technique but often omit some small detail or otherwise alter the traditional images just enough to avoid upsetting the delicate balance between the gods and human beings. | ||
