Saints from Taos

Six Directions represents several carvers of Bultos (Statues of Saints) from the Taos Area. In New Mexico this is a traditional craft handed down from father to son for generaions. Originally, this craft developed when the Catholic, Hispanic people of New Mexico were isolated from Spain and Mexico and had to develop their own unique approach to creating saints for the alter. In recent years, certain individual styles have developed in this area. We represent several members of the Salazar family and John Garcia. All of our carvers use the local cedar, traditionally used for carving Bultos.
